FREEPORT FORWARD IS ADVANCING THE CITY’S RIVERFRONT
As the center of the City’s industrial and cultural heritage, the riverfront and surrounding neighborhoods were once Freeport’s front door. With the loss of major industry and economic downturn, the community has struggled with job loss and disinvestment. The Freeport Forward Initiative is a collaborative effort to promote reinvestment, strengthen neighborhoods celebrate the river, and support the many community-driven initiatives throughout the riverfront area.
The work of tying together and advancing these riverfront initiatives has been made possible by a Sustainable Communities grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Moving forward, the City’s efforts are supported by major grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Department of Transportation.
